Allegheny Valley Railroad

One item of interest along the AVRR was the Foxburg Bridge. The Foxburg Bridge is only peripherally related to the AVRR in that it was the AVRR's actions in precluding what became the B&O from crossing it at grade (presumably) which was the impetus behind the double-decked span with the railroad on the upper span. In modern times the upper deck has been vacated and the approaches removed, and PennDOT is planning to relocate PA 58 onto a new bridge in 2004, but in the interim the bridge, effectively one lane with a sidewalk added outside the span, soldiers on.

Here's a pointer to Terraserver illustrating the bridge and surroundings. Note the AVRR running up the east (right) bank of the Allegheny, and the B&O (Pittsburgh & Western) switchback on the hill further east in Foxburg. This map is old enough that it shows the approaches in place.

Note that if you're using netscape, you may get a 404 error from Terraserver. The image isn't missing, they're sending a bad Style Sheet link. If you disable Style Sheets in your preferences, then view, you'll see it works fine.

North side of bridge from east bank. Wake was from a small craft which had been under the bridge apparently looking up moments before. I should have gone down to see if they were involved in the replacement or in a river life study which is preceding the replacement.
